Pearl Pass Trail

Posted by on Monday, August 08, 2005 (PST)

Pearl Pass jeep trail Crested Butte Colorado July 2005.

Pearl Pass Colorado

Pearl Pass 4x4 jeep trail is a 6 rated trails. To get to the trail from
Crested Butte go South on 135 head North on Brush Creek Road
FS 738. This road goes to the airport and country club. This trail is
very scenic with shelf roads that are one vehicle wide. Most of the trail
is easy but there are some shelf roads that are only one vehicle wide.

Just a few of the lupines at the begining of the trail.

The air down.

We are on the right trail.

A field of tiny daisies.

Mark n Sherri leading the way.

Sam with his new warn winch.

Mike moving along in his Cherokee.

Gary in his newly lifted rubicon.

A nice little waterfall along the way.

One of a number of small streams that you have to cross.

A beaver damn along the way.

The pictures kind of say it all.

Part of the ledge trail.

Sam going under the tree and leaving the ledge.

Sam with his new lift.

Gary going over a little obstacle.

.

Pausing close to the top.

This as far as we could go. Still alot of snow to melt to get accross to
the Aspen side.

The jeeps at the top.

Gary playing on the log bridge.

Still playing.

Mark n Sheri making a big splash across the creek. The jeep stalled in
the water and Sam almost got to pull us out. But the jeep started just
before he could get the tow strap hooked.

Sam winning the award for the best splash.

Mike showing that a cherokee can throw up some water too.

Gary and Susan splashing across..

A panorama at the top.

This was a fun and scenic trip the four wheeling was easy but the

scenery was outstanding.

I ran the pass back in 1990, when I was going to school at Western State. I was back in Crested Butte for my honeymoon in 2002, and was told that the Pearl Pass trail was permenantly closed because of wash and errosion. Has that been changed?

I am currently Stationed in Iraq, with the Army and would drag my jeep (and my wife) all the way out there, for the opportunity to spend a couple of days on the trials out there.

We ran it just about a week before this trip report was posted in 2005. The trail was not permanently closed in 2002. We had to turn around near the top due to the snow still burying the trail. I think the pass was closed for a couple of summers maybe is all. It is really nice up there and we would like to go back again sometime.
Take care and be careful over there.

We ran it in August 2007 - after being turned back by heavy snow in 9/06 (and rescuing some folk from the lower section). The forest service has worked on the Butte side of the trail substantially in the summer of '07, smoothing out many sections and taking the kinks out (whether you like that or no).

It is not especially difficult, just requiring a gentle touch and careful tire placement. But the beauty of the high country is not easily described. Pearl coupled with its cousin, Taylor Pass, are roughly the same degree of difficulty...
