Installing a Trackbar Relocation Bracket

Posted by on Sunday, April 11, 2004 (PST)

Installation of the Old Man Emu rear trackbar relocation bracket. (Pan Hard Relocation Bracket)

With a 3.5" suspension lift and a 1" body lift there was some definite binding of the suspension at full extension was evident.  This made for a rough ride and a noticable loss of flex on the trail.  In order to correct this I decided it was necessary to install a rear track bar relocation bracket in order to realign the rear axle under the Jeep.

The first thing I found was that the bolts had a few years of grim and needed to be sprayed with lubricant and was left to soak for about 20 minutes.

Upon returning I began jacking up the drivers side and supporting it with jack stands.  Once the jeep was support I proceeded to pull off the drivers side wheel off so access to the track bar support was possible.  Once you gain access to the trackbar support disconnect the trackbar at the axle and also disconnect the trackbar on the passengers side near the frame.

Once these are disconnected you can begin drilling the new holes for the relocation bracket. The first thing to do is remove the bracket from it's packaging.

With it removed fit the bracket over the trackbar mounting location and mark the holes. Once the holes are marked then let the drivers side of the axle drop down as far as possible this will allow you to drill the proper holes. If you can not get enough droop then it may be necessary to use a right angled drill. Two holes need to be drilled, one in the back side of the mounting and a second one on top toward the front of the jeep.  Bolt the bracket in place with the original bolt and spacer in place of the original trackbar location.  After doing this use the bracket as a guide to drill the necessary holes.

They are indicated with the arrows in following pictures.

The toughest is the hole that needs to be drilled on top of the mounting bracket.

Once drilled mount the bracket with the bolts making sure to get the lock washers on the bolts while putting them in.  With the relocation bracket mounted fit the track bar in the top part of the bracket and secure with a lock washer and nut.  (The red arrow indicates where the final bolt mounts into the trackbar mount.)

Once the trackbar has been mounted to the relocation bracket put the tire back on the vehicle and lower it down off the stands and pull out the jack.

With the vehicle fully lowered climb under the jeep and slowly work the jeep wheels back and forth to realign the axle under the frame.  Hold the trackbar up to the frame mounting location and slowly work the jeep back and forth until the trackbar slides into the mount.  Push the original bolt through the mounting bracket and tighten all bolts to manufacturers recommeded settings.
